Founded on January 23, 1972 in New Delhi by eminent journalists, the National Union of Journalists (India) is a national organisation dedicated to the cause of mediapersons. NUJ (I) is affiliated to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Brussels, Belgium.

Our Aim

NUJ (I) has been fighting for the interests of mediapersons and for establishing high standards in journalism. It has never been a mute spectator when the rights of mediapersons were trampled upon.

About NUJ (I)

The name of the association shall be “The National Union of Journalists (India)”. The Registered office is located at 7, Jantar Mantar Road, Second Floor, New Delhi.

Our AIM & Objectives

  • Promote, safeguard, and defend the professional interests, welfare, and status of working journalists.
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.
  • Strive for and defend the freedom and independence of the Press.
  • Improve working conditions: salary, service tenure, allowances, facilities, and privileges.
  • Safeguard interests of journalists and help members secure employment.
  • Establish benevolent and pension funds; provide employment, sickness, and death benefits.
  • Promote bipartite/tripartite wage agreements on an all-India basis.
  • Work for legislation for journalists’ welfare, press freedom, and self-regulation; support proper industry development free from outside control.
  • Arrange training; establish and maintain institutes of journalism at State and all-India levels.
  • Promote recreation and cultural activities; maintain libraries.
  • Collect and circulate press-related statistics and information to grow a free Press.
  • Conduct and publish journals; own and run a printing press.
  • Encourage journalist cooperatives; start newspapers, news agencies, and electronic news channels.
  • Build and administer funds for legal aid, pension, and other benefits.

Membership

Subject to the Constitution and Rules, membership is open to all working journalists in or related to India and abroad employed by Indian media.

  • Direct Members: 18+ and qualified under Section 4; at least six months’ work in States without an affiliated union.
  • Corporate: State units of working journalists (composite unions not included).
  • Honorary Members: Retired on age/infirmity or those with outstanding service.
  • Associate Members: Journalism faculty, media experts, freelancers, trainees, online writers (no voting rights).
  • Institutional Member: Media organizations or platforms.

Governance, Elections & Discipline

Participation

Direct members and members of affiliated unions may attend, address, and vote at general body meetings.

Election Oversight

  • NUJ(I) may remind affiliated unions to hold elections after term expiry.
  • If not held within three months, NUJ(I) may appoint a Returning Officer; the unit must cooperate.
  • If a unit refuses to cooperate, a Convenor may be appointed until a new executive is elected.

Disaffiliation Grounds

  • Failure to hold state executive elections despite reminders.
  • Anti-NUJ(I) activities.
  • Non-payment of quota money and dues for over four years.
  • Wilful disregard of National Executive directions.

Disaffiliation decisions require approval by the National Executive with a 2/3rd majority of members present and voting, and an absolute majority of the total National Executive.

Sponsored Bodies

For any trust/society/body corporate sponsored or promoted by NUJ(I), the National Executive retains overall direction and supervision, notwithstanding any contrary provisions.
